Award-winning Canadian designer Patty Johnson has a built her practice on the exploration of globalization and sustainability.
In 2007, she teamed up with the Botswana-based studio of Peter Mabeo to embark on a new model of craft and design collaboration.
This mushroom stool is inspired by traditional stools of Africa. The word ‘Thuthu’ is a short version of the word ‘mushroom’ in Setswana.
In the striped version, the Thuthu stool has hand painted black stripes that are random in thickness. This detail is left entirely to the finishing craftsman. Made from sustainably harvested hardwoods, the Thuthu stool is made to be ecologically, aesthetically, and culturally sustainable.
The standard size is ideal as a cafeteria or breakfast table. It is also available in custom sizes for use as a formal dining table or meeting table, with seating capacities in excess of ten chairs when required.
