Smith style four drawer antique chest of drawers with white statuary marble top. The front elevation features three drawers set back in the central part and an advanced drawer in the lower part all interspersed with a throat chain. The maple inlay in the central part of the drawer has a raceme motif and has a large bronze mouth in the center for the accommodation of the key. The interior is maple in the Neapolitan tradition. George Smith: Owner of a large cabinet-making workshop in London and active between 1804 and 1828, famous for having published in 1808 an album of engravings entitled “A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture”, some scholars advanced the hypothesis that the Neapolitan “Smith” furniture was inspired by George Smith’s designs.
