Hand-crafted in the late 19th century, having a square beveled and etched butterfly foliate motif hinged glass lid, patinated gilt metal frame, exquisite hand painted polychrome decoration, blue ground, rich beautifully colored and stylized lizard with whimsical flowing floral vine foliage motif, finished on all sides, boldly contrasting ruby red tufted cushion upholstered interior, rising on fanciful gilt bronze ormolu scroll mask winged paw feet.
The glass top has numerous M’s integrated in the etching, attributed to Moser Glassworks, Bohemia (present day Czech Republic)
A remarkable example, the scarce antique, circa 1880, would make for a stunning jewelry box, watch or important collectible display case, or placed on a table, desk or shelf as a whimsical, sophisticated and artistical decorative object!
