Large 18th Century Colonial Pennsylvania carved pine over-mantle panel, a hand-carved pine single board frieze with deep bas relief acanthus leaf scrolls against a scoop carved background. Panel is in its original dark matte finish, and retains a paper label on the reverse inscribed Miss B. Elvey Campbell, Philadelphia (the label, probably for shipping, appears to be from the mid-19th century). The panel was likely a carved frieze from a colonial fireplace mantel: an extremely rare architectural survivor. It has two original wooden cross-braces on the back, mounted with two old but later metal brackets for hanging.
The panel is in excellent condition. There are a few piercings through the wood where the carving proved very thin, and are quite likely original to the piece. The finish remains uniform, with a pleasant patina.
